Fried green tomatoes are an absolutely favorite food. If you’re lucky enough to find green tomatoes at your local farmer’s market buy them – I promise you wont be disappointed. I like to do this dish when the tomatoes are still on the harder side – if you wait until they’re soft, they’ll fall apart when you make the dish.
FRIED GREEN TOMATOES
2 large firm green tomatoes, sliced into thick slices
White corn meal, ok to use yellow if you can’t find white, but it’s not my preference
Canola oil (for frying)
Kosher salt
Slice your tomato into thick slices
Place corn meal into a shallow dish
Put a nice layer of oil in a fry pan and warm up to med-high heat
While oil is heating up press tomato slices into corn meal and make sure both sides are nicely covered
Then place them in the fry pan and cook until golden brown
Flip and cook until the second side is golden brown as well
Remove from oil
Place on paper towel lined dish and sprinkle with salt while they’re still hot
I prefer to eat these when they’re still blazing hot, but some folks prefer to eat them when they’ve cooled down a bit.
