Christmas Morning Breakfast Roll

Every year my mom makes a Christmas morning breakfast roll. She makes a slight variation of the roll each year, sometimes going back and re-creating the recipe from a past year… she has notes of all variations of this recipe dating all the way back to 1977. The one pictured features orange honey, orange zest, lemon zest, homemade candied orange peel and plenty of spices.

Below is my recipe for my first attempt to recreate mom’s famous Christmas morning breakfast roll.

CHRSTIMAS MORNING BREAKFAST ROLL

1 recipe of your favorite sweet yeast dough (like for cinnamon rolls)
Sugar
Brown Sugar
Honey
Cinnamon
Clove
Nutmeg
Your favorite dried fruits – gold raisins, craisins, dried apple

After the dough has risen for the first time, roll it round and flat (think a HUGE pie shell)
Sprinkle with your favorite spices – I used cinnamon, clove and nutmeg
Sprinkle with brown sugar and maybe a little bit of honey
Sprinkle with your favorite dried fruits – this year I used golden raisins, orange essence craisins from Trader Joe’s, and diced dried apple
Once all the goodies are spread out on the dough, roll it up as you would a jelly roll
Then twist into a circle, pinching the ends together
Pre-heat oven to 350-375’
Let the roll rise a second time
Bake at 350-375′ (depending on your dough recipe specifications)
Remove from the oven and cool
Serve at room temperature
If you want to add a special extra touch, make up a quick icing of water and powdered sugar and drizzle this on top just before serving
